Plain and Fancy by Joseph Stein and Will Glickman, music by Albert Hague, lyrics by Arnold B. Horwitt, is the tale of a sophisticated New Yorker, Dan King (Ray Puddicombe), who inherits a farm in Pennsylvania's Amish country in the community of Bird in Hand. Joan Galstaun directed, Bob Young was musical director and Susan Carey was choreographer.
Both a horse and a car were used in the show. Driving onto the stage took some major rearranging of the upstage backdrop, so the car could get on and off without knocking down the set.
The most dramatic event in the show was when the barn burned down (followed in a subsequent scene by a barn-raising). The techniques used for the burning bush in Green Pastures and the funeral pyre in Around the World in 80 Days, plus two smoke gener-ators, gave a safe but visually dramatic image of the burning barn. About 5,500 attended the seven shows.
