2024 Fall Classic

September 14, 15, 21, 22, 2024

Widely considered a masterpiece, The Crucible is a classic play that delves into the Salem witch trials of 1692. Set in the Puritan town of Salem, Massachusetts, Miller’s play unfolds as a chilling allegory for the anti-Stalinist McCarthyism of the 1950s. Later in life Miller admitted that it also retrospectively applied to the Stalinist witch trials of the 30s. The plot centers on the hysteria that erupts when a group of girls accuses fellow villagers of witchcraft. As the trials progress, the town is consumed by fear, paranoia, and a distorted sense of justice.

Among the most produced plays since its 1953 debut, The Crucible came directly out of the anti-Stalinist fever that gripped the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was not until very late if life that Miller admitted that its message also applied to the Stalinist purge trials of the 30s in the USSR. Many of his friends and allies on the anti-Stalinist Left denounced the play.

The Crucible is still produced 70 years later because Miller wrote a pattern rather than an allegory tied to one era. Fear grows into hysteria, accusation becomes proof of virtue, and one person has to decide whether to save himself with a lie or keep his name.

This show was to begin a series of 'Fall' shows directed by Mia McGlinn. Unlike the previous Fall Classic (1990, 1991, 1992) which centered around 'classic' theater, the play choices are more eclectic. This series is also different in being almost exclusively staffed with actors from the Kitsap Penninsula, unlike the spring and summer shows which include people from the Seattle area as well as Kitsap.

One other differentiator is that music is included in non-musical productions, much as the underscoring in a movie. Bryce McGuire, Ila Dreessen, and Skye Campbell were central players in this area.
